Digital Directories

I designed the user interface and user experience for 15 major U.S. Shopping Centers, including Syracuse’s Destiny USA, Albany’s Crossgates Center, & Buffalo’s Walden Galleria. Every day, thousands of mall visitors engage these touchscreen directories to find their way to their favorite restaurants and retailers.

Fully integrated with the websites, the directories aim to empower the businesses within the mall, as well as it's everyday users.

The design needed to make intelligent compromises. For example, because the top of the screen was out of reach for a large pool of users, the area was kept available for advertising videos & stills.

I leaned heavily on user personas to make sure the design worked for everyone.

ADA Compliance was front-of-mind as well. The accessibility button brings the controls closer to the bottom of the screen and boosts their size to ensure they’re easy to interact with for all visitors.

One unique challenge came in representing multiple-floors using only a two-dimensional reference of the maps.

By first establishing a consistent two-dimensional representation of each floor, I was able to impose the maps onto a perspective grid to make the best use of the screen’s limited space.

Between the limited color palette and the sparing use of motion, attention is directed to the right places. Locating the closest restroom is simple.
